PETERBOROUGH city centre was turned into a carnival of learning on Monday, when the Big Skill awards arrived in the city with a host of celebrity helpers. The Big Skill initiative is organised by the Learning and Skills Council in partnership with BBC East to recognise people from the region who have improved their own life or the lives of others through learning.

A raft of demonstrations took place on a range of different skills, from bricklaying to a racing car simulator, and from learning to be a TV presenter to drama displays.

Lending a helping hand throughout the day were BBC sports presenter Ray Stubbs and BBC weathergirl Julie Reinger.

The event gave the chance for groups and organisations across the city to show their talent, including Peterborough Regional College students, who performed extracts from their forthcoming show, Twelfth Night.
