Fifteen teams battled it out in the Lakeside Sailing Club's 12th annual 24-hour sail at Ferry Meadows on Saturday, 20 June.Sailing in relays, the teams raced throughout the night to get around the race course as many times as possible, each lap notching up more valuable sponsorship cash.

Afterwards, Barry Easom, proprietor of Lakeside Leisure, in the Nene Park, Peterborough, which includes the sailing club, said: "It was an immensely successful event – everyone is still buzzing.

"We reckon that between 3,500 and 4,000 has been raised. This will be donated to the Dartmouth Lifeboats, which also had a crew taking part in the race.

He said: "The weather was fabulous and it was a lovely night to be sailing. I think it is the best 24-hour race we have staged so far.

Mr Easom added: "We are already looking to organise next year's event."

Highlight of the event was a dramatic fly-past by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight featuring the famous Second World Spitfire and Hurricane fighter aircraft and an impressive Lancaster bomber.

Keeping the sailing crews entertained while they waited for their turn to get on to the water were the musicians of Shake Hands Eric and the Collabor8ors.

The winners of the race were the Lakeside Leisure instructors in a boat called Phantom and they sailed an impressive 88 laps. In second place was the crew of Gentleman Jim. There was also a magnificent 30 laps completed by Lakeside Leisure's caf staff in their pedalo.
