Hundreds of animal rights protesters descend on a town centre

HUNDREDS of protesters brought town centre traffic to a standstill as they voiced their anger against cruelty to animals.Members of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) took to the Huntingdon streets to protest against Huntingdon Life Science (HLS).

SHAC was set up in 1999 with the sole aim of closing HLS down. The group believe using animals to test drugs is wrong.

It is the first time in four years that Cambridgeshire has seen such a protest, and around 400 people took part holding banners aloft, and using megaphones to shout out anti-animal cruelty slogans.

It started at Riverside Park, and continued around the ring road, via the town centre, before protesters travelled in convoy to the HLS site, at nearby Woolley, yesterday afternoon.

Police maintained a visible presence throughout both stages of the event to ensure minimal disruption to traffic and to protect the safety of those involved in the protest.

Chief Inspector Darren Alderson, who organised the police operation, said: "The operation has been successful and both the march and protest were conducted peacefully.

"There were some minor delays in the Huntingdon area and traffic in Alconbury and Great Stukeley was increased as protesters made their way to and from Woolley."
