ONE of the biggest housebuilders in the region has announced plans to close one in three of its regional companies – resulting in hundreds of job cuts.Taylor Wimpey, owners of Bryant Homes, proposes to close 13 offices, including Bryant Peterborough, based at Lynch Wood Business Park, Bryant Anglia, Bryant Eastern, and Bryant East Midlands.
An internal e-mail was sent round to the housebuilder’s 4,700 UK employees yesterday outlining the plans.
In the east, it currently has about 30 developments in the pipeline, under construction or nearing completion.
In Peterborough, this includes Broadway Fields in Yaxley – a collection of one and two bedroom apartments and three and four bedroom homes.
Taylor Wimpey chief executive Peter Redfern said the company was acting now to end uncertainty among its staff.
He said: “Our experience in the US, and historically in the UK, is that when housing markets slow, those that react most quickly and decisively become stronger businesses, and provide the most secure and positive environment for their continuing staff.”
Staff consultations are taking place with some workers possibly being offered transfers to other offices.
