Hi-tech security at city nursery

Mums and dads have been given peace of mind at one nursery after a hi-tech fingerprint entry system was installed to create an even safer environment.

Mums and dads have been given peace of mind at one nursery after a hi-tech fingerprint entry system was installed to create an even safer environment. Most parents, when they are out and about doing their everyday jobs, spend the whole day worrying that their little boy or girl is safe.

Of course, if left in nursery care, they can be almost certain that qualified staff and carers will have an eye on their children all the time, but one nursery has gone that bit further to ease their concerns.

It may sound like the entry system from a James Bond film, but The Day Nursery, in Priestgate, Peterborough, has brought in fingerprint technology to keep out unwelcome visitors.

The fingerprint scanning system has been installed to control entry to a children's nursery. Only parents and carers whose fingerprints are kept on a database will be able to gain access.

The system was installed to provide maximum security for children and staff.

Nursery owner Lynne Draper, said the move meant only authorised people could be admitted on to the site.

Mrs Draper said: "Before the children join the nursery, parents are asked to attend a pre-visit, where they place their thumb or a finger on an electronic scanner.

"The print is stored on a computer and used to confirm the person's identity. It stores a numerical pattern attached to that fingerprint, not an actual copy of a fingerprint.

"The system also keeps a record of all access."

The new secure door also stops children from leaving the front of the building, and onto Priestgate without supervision.

As one of the first in the country, the day nursery is the only one in Cambridgeshire to have the system installed.

NurseryCam Ltd installed the system at the nursery, which caters for youngsters aged three months to five years.

Managing director of NurseryCam Dr Melissa Kao said: "When people think of fingerprint identification, they think of James Bond films. This proves that this technology is available to everyday services too."

It is not the first bit of NurseryCam equipment the nursery has employed – a webcam-style setup allows parents to watch a secure live feed of the nursery room when on the internet.

The Day Nursery has only been open for three years, but has already received a glowing Government Ofsted report.

A maximum of 40 children may attend the nursery at any one time.
