Green Festival 2009: Green Travel: Cycling really is the wheel deal.

-------------------

Plan your journey. You can do this online at travelchoice.org.uk or purchase the Peterborough Cycle Map. It includes the Green Wheel as well as local cycle routes and is available from Tourist Information, the Travelchoice Centre and all local cycle shops for 1.50.

Wear fluorescent clothing to make sure you are seen and fit front and rear lights to your bike. They are required by law when cycling at night.

Take along a puncture repair kit on your rides, and make sure you know how to use it.

Make your good going pledge via travelchoice.org.uk, at the Travelchoice Centre or visit us at exhibitions. In return, you'll receive a pledge card entitling you to discounts at all local independent bike shops and more, plus a quarterly newsletter.

Don't forget a good bike lock. Try to lock your bike to something sturdy in an area that is overlooked. Experts recommend spending about 10 per cent of the cost of your bike on a good lock. For peace of mind, get your bike security marked and register it online at www.immobilise.com and check it's insured.

Invest in a good helmet. Most Peterborough cycle shops will offer advice on the best one for you.

Check your chain is oiled and tyres are pumped up and look after your brakes so they are capable of stopping you quickly and safely.

Make sure the saddle is the right height – you should be able to almost straighten your leg when the pedal is at its lowest point. Set your handlebars around the same height.

Search for a cycling buddy to share your journey with. Visit www.travelchoice.org.uk and click on the 'share it' icon.

Encourage your employer to set up a Cycle to Work Scheme. This is a government-backed scheme that enables you to purchase a bicycle and accessories tax free via your salary, enabling you to save about 40 per cent.
