A Peterborough project which aims to create a "green" haven has installed wind and solar energy on its site – thanks to a much-needed cash boost. The Green Backyard, in Oundle Road, Woodston, has been given a 3,000 donation from EDF Energy Networks to buy wind and solar equipment to generate energy on the site, which is run by volunteers and the social enterprise Seeding Futures.
It boasts an allotment and hosts regular events to encourage people to eat healthy food grown there, plus recycling and art activities.
Father and daughter team Renny and Sophie Antonelli, the Green Backyard project manager, have already sourced much of the reclaimed material needed to get the wind and solar power set up, including an old lamp post which will form part of the wind generation system.
Thanks to EDF Energy Networks they can now afford to purchase the remaining technical and electronic equipment required for the project.
Sophie said: "Thanks to EDF Energy Networks we will be able to realise our dream of setting up a renewable power source for the site as a whole – providing the energy to run computers, lighting and power tools. Equally importantly, it will enable us to showcase the use of renewable energy to our many visitors and volunteers."
This is EDF Energy Network's second contribution to the project, following major upgrade to the electricity network in this part of the city.
