PROTESTERS waving placards and holding a 30 foot petition asking the council to clamp down on graffiti greeted Peterborough City Council officials and councillors on their way into their monthly full meeting.

The group have collected 500 signatures from a sample of just 12 streets in Orton Longueville, where they claim graffiti plagues many of the roads.

They handed the petition over to councillors after a group of six people met outside Town Hall on Bridge Street immediately before yesterday’s meeting of the council.

The campaign has been set up by resident and activist Lisa Forbes, who feels the area has been neglected by council officials.

She said: “A number of people have reported the graffiti to the council but nothing seems to get done about it. This has been going on for too long.

“It is all over Orton Longueville and especially in the underpasses. You expect some graffiti, but the problem is it is not being cleaned up and that attracts more graffiti.

“We taped the petition papers together and it measures about 30 feet from start to end - that illustrates the strength of feeling about this issue in the Ortons.

The petition calls on the council to remove the extensive graffiti in many areas of Orton Longueville and requests that further instances are dealt with at once. She chronicles graffiti on her website http://www.lisaforbes.com.

@keen reader (#5), There is some illegal graffiti in Stanground - there are "SSC" tags all over the place, which I believe stands for "Stanground Sausage Chums".

There is a graffi board in Stanground and it is well used and there is minimal graffitti around the area. Maybe a board here is needed, however will this stop some of the youngsters???? Maybe parents should be more visualiant and see if their children come home covered in spray paint and put a stop to it.

Problem is even if the vandals are caught they only get a slap on the wrist. Disadvantaged upbringing and all that...

Great to see some active residents with no party politics. But why on earth are the present cllrs for Orton doing nothing on this and other issues - do any of them live here.We do get newletters and callers from the Labour Party but no one else and not a word from the Tory cllrs who take too much in expenses and do not deliver..Whilst these folk were protesting the cllrs were voting to keep their expenses.

What happened to the official graffiti boards? Are they still there and used? Where I live there is graffiti on the dog poo bins. I find it unbelievable that anyone would want to stand close to a poo bin for that long!
