5PM: POLICE today swooped to arrest a teenager following an invetigation into widespread graffiti tagging. The 18-year-old was arrested after a warrant was executed in relation to graffiti problems that have blighted Spalding recently.

A police spokesperson said: "Information has been developed from a number of sources in relation to the identity of the youth and the tags that he has been spraying on public and private buildings."

Property from the home of the youth has been seized as potential evidence of any involvement of vandalism and graffiti spraying.

"Graffiti and similar vandalism which is destroying our town is a priority for the town centre neighbourhood policing team and everything is being done in connection with South Holland District Council to not only catch those who are responsible but to ensure that it is removed from buildings and properties quickly."

"Police will not tolerate the town's buildings being used as a canvas for individuals or groups to spray derogatory images and words which are creating an extremely negative impression of the area," continued the spokesperson. "We hope that this arrest will show that action is taken on information received from members of the public and we will continue to do so."

The youth was taken to Spalding police station to be interviewed by officers.

Anyone who has information about the groups or individuals who are either seen leaving their 'tags' or have information about youths who are purchasing spray paint are being urged to contact police on 01775 722233.
