FRIENDS and family of a dedicated fireman who died two years ago are holding a special family weekend in his memory to raise vital funds for cancer research.Father of two Steven Lynch was just 32 years old when he died of Hodgkinson Lymphoma in August 2007 following a short battle with the disease.
Following his death, more than 100 firefighters paid tribute to the "model" fireman during a full fire brigade service at Peterborough Crematorium.
Steven, who lived in Orton Wistow, had served as a uniformed health and safety officer, and also a volunteer firefighter at the Peterborough Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, in Bourges Boulevard.
Now, two years after his death, his friend Philip Rigarlsford (28) has set up the Steven Lynch Memorial Pool Tournament and family weekend at the Chequers Pub, in Orton Wistow.
The whole weekend at the pub, in Napier Place, will be dedicated to raising money for Cancer Research UK in the name of the man who worked tirelessly to help the people of the city.
Philip, who is organising the event and sponsoring it through his company R and R Recruitment, said: "I wanted to run a pool tournament and do it in his name.
"Also, I don't think you can swing a cat without hitting someone who has been affected by cancer. There's a word, affable, and that doesn't even come close to describing Steven. He wouldn't say boo to a goose."
The event, which is being held at the pub on Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28, from 1pm to 8pm on both days will be full of family activities.
Among them is the main event, a pool tournament with a top prize of 100, but there will also be a raffle and auction with prizes such as a night's stay at the Bell Inn, in Stilton, near Peterborough.
Tickets to the Key Theatre and a holiday for four at the coast will also be on offer, as will a bouncy castle so the children can enjoy the day.
The event also has the seal of approval from Steven's father, John Lynch (65), a former firefighter himself, who said: "The family are very touched by what's going on and hopefully we'll raise loads of money.
"Steven would have enjoyed an event like this. He was an outgoing, friendly person and also worked in the pub for a few years when he was younger, so knows the people around there."
Steve, a keen sportsman and Tottenham Hotspur fan, leaves a widow, Ellie, and two daughters, Chloe (11) and Molly (4), a brother and two sisters.
