FORMER Peterborough MP Helen Clark is to face city magistrates accused of using abusive and threatening behaviour and being drunk and disorderly in a city hotel's bar.Mrs Clark was listed to appear before Peterborough Magistrates' Court yesterday on two offences.
But Mrs Clark, who served as Labour Peterborough MP between 1997 and 2005, was not in court. No pleas were entered and the cases were adjourned for two weeks.
The 53-year-old, of Huntly Grove, Peterborough, was charged with using "threatening or abusive behaviour or insulting words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress, contrary to section 5(1) and (6) of the Public Order Act 1986".
She was also charged with "while being at the Great Northern Hotel's bar, being guilty, while drunk, of disorderly behaviour contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Justice Act 1967".
Both offences relate to June 15 this year.
The offences can only be heard in the magistrates' court and each carry a maximum fine of 1,000 on conviction.
Mrs Clark had an eight-year spell as Peterborough's MP and was one of the original "Blair Babes" when she won the constituency as Helen Brinton during Labour's General Election landslide victory in 1997.
She was re-elected in 2001 – the same year she married political journalist Alan Clark in a ceremony at the Great Northern Hotel.
She lost her seat, four years later, to current city MP Conservative Stewart Jackson.
