BOSSES of Peterborough firms have pledged their support for a prestigious cycle race which will attract more than 10,000 visitors to Peterborough on 4th June.Traffic in the city centre will come to a standstill and dozens of cyclists will become kings of the road as they go head-to-head on a 1.1km circuit around the city centre, on Thursday (4 June).
But despite closing about nine roads for more than seven hours to hold the high-profile event, which is laid on by the organisers of the Tour of Britain, city companies say it will cause little inconvenience to them as it will bring a much-needed boost to the city and its economy.
Pre-race preparations for the showpiece Tour Series Peterborough cycling event, which will be shown to thousands on TV, means roads will be closed along the cycle route from 2pm.
The race, which starts outside the town hall in Bridge Street at 7pm, passes through Cathedral Square, up Church Street and Cowgate and left at the roundabout along Bourges Boulevard and left into Bridge Street.
Roads that will be closed on the day from 2pm to 9pm, include: Bourges Boulevard southbound, Priestgate, Church Street, Cross Street, Wentworth Street, Cowgate, King Street, Long Causeway and Trinity Street.
Diversion routes will be in place for Bourges Boulevard southbound traffic. The northbound lanes of Bourges Boulevard will remain open at all times.
Manager of the City Club, in Priestgate, Steve Jason said he would welcome any event that brought new people into the city.
He said: "We will have to look at how deliveries will be made that day but, other than that, there will be no real inconvenience for us. I am all for anything that brings life into the city centre."
Managing director of Pitman Training in Trinity Court, Trinity Street, Peterborough, Stuart Clarke, said: "I live in north Hertfordshire so, to make it easier, I am just going to take the day off. It is not an inconvenience to me as I always had the option of getting the train.
"Although I don't live in the city, any event like this can only be a good thing and it will provide a much-needed boost for the city at a time when spirits are down."
Manager of the Fitness Zone, Wentworth Street, Peterborough, Michelle Hind, added: "The race is going to have quite a big impact on us because it means our customers won't be able to park as close as they would like and our staff will have to find other ways of getting in. However, like the Great Eastern Run, it is only one day in a year, and, as it will benefit the city, we support it."
During the afternoon, there will be music and cycling-related activities including youth and amateur races, demonstrations and skills sessions.
