Firework Fiesta cash handed out to charities

ONE of the largest charity events in the region held its annual cheque presentation ceremony for cheerful recipients at Serpentine Green.

ONE of the largest charity events in the region held its annual cheque presentation ceremony for cheerful recipients at Serpentine Green.More than 40 supporters participated in the reception at the shopping centre, in Hampton, Peterborough, including charity chiefs, local businessmen and co-ordinators of Peterborough’s Firework Fiesta.

“Firework Fiesta’s November show was the first time in more than 30 years that rain has seriously hindered proceedings,” said Marcus Horrell, the president of the Rotary Club of Peterborough, which is one of the event’s key organisers.

“Our volunteer staff and visitors experienced a serious downpour on the night.

“‘Soaked to the skin’ had a real meaning that evening and all weather equipment was tested to destruction.

“Nevertheless, the show went on, and, for the hardy souls who braved the conditions, the spectacle lit up even the darkest and wettest of skies.

“This year, despite the turbulent tempest lowering attendance, we still have 8,000 to distribute to local charities.

“Last year, generous Peterborough citizens generated a record 29,700 surplus, so we are hoping it will be another 30 years before we are challenged by freak conditions again.”

Charities receiving cheques included Hospital at Home and Peterborough Sailability.
