FIREFIGHTERS were called to an off-licence in Wisbech after an underground electrical junction box exploded. The incident happened on Saturday night outside the premises in Nene Quay, on the banks of the River Nene.

Two crews from Wisbech and the turntable ladder from Dogsthorpe station in Peterborough were called at 11.22pm to reports of a fire, but on arrival found that they were not needed.

Electricity engineers arrived at the scene minutes later to make the necessary repairs to the box.

A spokesman for the fire service said crews had remained on standby at the scene to ensure members of the public were kept back as the engineers mended the box.

The incident was brought under control just after midnight and crews returned to base at 12.30pm.

No one was injured during the incident.
