ELEVEN hardy volunteers, led by a park ranger, managed to plant more than 50 trees in two hours at a city beauty spot.
The group took part in the Nene Park Trust’s volunteer day on Wednesday and worked hard to plant ash and field maple trees in the Lynch Wood area of Ferry Meadows.
David Radley, visitor services manager, said: “It went really well. We had a keen bunch of volunteers who planted well over 50 trees.”
It was the fourth volunteer day the trust has organised, with other sessions including bulb-planting, willow harvesting and weed clearance around the base of the trees in the park.
They are proving so popular that Mr Radley said the trust was looking to expand the volunteer programme soon.
He said: “It’s been really successful and we have a long waiting list for people showing an interest so we are looking at expanding it at some point.”
The next volunteer day will take place on February 8.
Anyone interested in volunteering at Ferry Meadows should contact the Nene Park Trust on 01733 234193.
