SOCIAL networking site Facebook is among the top 10 websites visited by council staff in Peterborough.A Freedom of Information request to Peterborough City Council revealed the top 10 most popular web pages browsed by the council’s 2,500 users in July included Facebook – because staff were being encouraged to support the Facebook campaign to try and bring the Radio 1 Big Weekend show to Peterborough.
Other popular websites included BBC News, Peterboroughtoday, Google, the Daily Mail and Learn Direct.
A spokesperson for the council said: “We only specifically monitor the sites that individuals are accessing if it is part of an internal investigation, so other than blocking inappropriate sites, it is up to individual managers to ensure that staff are using e-mail and the internet appropriately.
“Some staff ‘browse’ as part of their job and we do make use of social networking sites as part of some campaigns, wherever appropriate.
“There are a range of legitimate reasons for staff to be accessing the internet during the working day. For example we are currently using Facebook and Bebo for our Safer Peterborough work to engage with a wider range of local people.”
