Election concerns as councillor resigns
PETERBOROUGH city councillor for the Walton ward David Vellam has resigned.
PETERBOROUGH city councillor for the Walton ward David Vellam has resigned. It is believed that the Liberal Democrat councillor, who was elected in 2006, has resigned for "personal reasons".
Liberal Democrat group leader on the city council councillor Nick Sandford said: "Obviously, it is very sad to have lost someone who has been a colleague and a fellow ward councillor."
He said he hoped that the council would hold off calling a by-election until elections were held in May.
He said: "The earliest a by-election could be held would be the end of February.
"I would strongly advise that it is held off until May.
"If not, there will be extra cost and the people of Walton would have to go to the polls twice in the space of a few months, which would not be ideal."
Cllr Vellam had been put forward by his part as a mayoral candidate at his first council meeting in 2006.
