A NEW waterless cleaning service for cars has been set up in Peterborough, and has a charge with a difference.The eco-friendly service is operating in one of the Queensgate shopping centre car parks and works by harnessing electric forces to clear vehicles of dirt.
It is hoped the eco car wash service will further enhance Peterborough's claim to be the greenest city in the UK.
A spokesman for Encore Performance, which operates the service at the Cavell car park, said the secret was in the special "shampoo" which is sprayed over each vehicle to effectively give all dirt particles a positive electric charge.
A negative charge in the cloth used to wipe the vehicle down the takes off all the dirt, leaving the car sparkling clean.
Site manager Michael Moore, who runs the service, said: "With today's regulations, it is important not to pollute the environment by rinsing detergents down the drain.
"In places such as Queensgate, there is no proper drainage system facilities, so what we did to bypass the problem was to create this waterless system to work in places where there isn't the right drainage."
It means city motorists can have their dirty wheels cleaned the eco-friendly way, news that has delighted Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), which is seeking to turn Peterborough into the environment capital of the UK.
Operations manager Rachel Huxley said: "It's great news that Queensgate has considered the environment with its new eco car wash service.
"The shopping centre takes its environmental responsibilities seriously, supporting the Green Festival every year and working with PECT to reduce the amount of waste the centre creates and increase recycling rates.
"The eco car wash is yet another example of how Peterborough's business community is getting behind the city's ambition to create the UK's Environment Capital."
Queensgate marketing manager Phil Drinkwater added: "It's fantastic that we can offer this eco-friendly car cleaning service to our shoppers."
