Dragon's roaring St George's event

HAVING just been named The Evening Telegraph's "fund-raisers of the year" you would have thought Janek and Jackie Skutela, who run The Dragon pub, in Werrington, would be taking it easy. But the Pride in Peterborough award winners refused to rest on their laurels and held a special St George's Day charity event for Peterborough Supports Heroes – an organisation closely linked to the pub – alongside co-organiser Phillipa Millard.

And they are now celebrating adding a cheque for 1,654 to the funds thanks to the generosity of the regulars and other members of the community who came along on Saturday.

Landlord of The Dragon, in Hodgson Avenue, Janek Skutela, described the day as "fantastic".

Janek said: "It started quite slowly but, as the day brightened up, the crowds arrived.

"The community spirit in Werrington is wonderful and everyone chipped in.

"We had plate smashing, karaoke singing, a bungee run, bouncy castle and the RAF Flight Simulator.

"The airmen from RAF Wittering were brilliant and the adults particularly loved having a go at flying."

The cash raised from the event will go to a charity which helps the current crop of heroes serving their country both home and abroad.

Janek added: "The party just went on all day and the sponsored karaoke was brilliant, as usual.

"Winning the Pride in Peterborough award was just amazing, especially when we saw who else was in the category. Just to get nominated was a huge achievement for us.

"We were delighted to win it, but it really is down to the community – they are the ones who support us and the charities."
