Daring digger recovery after JCB is submerged in water

A firm has carried out a daring recovery of a JCB digger from the bottom of a lake near Yaxley.

A firm has carried out a daring recovery of a JCB digger from the bottom of a lake near Yaxley. It is thought the six tonne vehicle had been stolen, before being dumped in the lake south of Peterborough.

Haulage recovery specialists Frank Ratcliffe and Son, based in Connington, near Peterborough, were called to drag the seven-tonne digger from the bottom of the lake in the early hours of Saturday morning (27 June).

Dave Stapleton, who works for the recovery firm, said the operation had been made more difficult because the digger had been completely submerged.

He said: "When we arrived at about 6am, we could see the digger was lying on its side fully submerged in the water. It looked like it had fallen off a ledge on the banks.

"It was a good 14 metres from the banks, and the water must have been at least six metres deep to submerge the digger.

"We used our inflatable walkways to get access to the digger and attach two winches to it, and begin to pull it out of the lake.

"Once we had recovered the digger, it was obvious that it would not be able to move on it's own accord because of all the mud and water, so we loaded it on to a flatbed truck."
