DAREDEVIL: Birthday trip leaves Sherida sky high

A TEENAGER celebrated her birthday by making a solo flight across the skies above Peterborough.

A TEENAGER celebrated her birthday by making a solo flight across the skies above Peterborough. Sherida Hurst has been involved with Peterborough and Spalding Gliding Club at Postland Airfield, in Crowland, for several months, but up until now her wings have been clipped by age restrictions.

Her patience paid off when she soared above the city for her 16th birthday treat.

Sherida, who lives in Spalding, said it was the perfect birthday.

She said: "The solo flight was scary at first, but I had some really good training and was well prepared.

"It was a clear day, with just the right wind conditions, and once in the air, I was just enjoying the flight – especially as it was my birthday."

Sherida even made a video diary of her flight, which she's hoping will be screened as part of the BBC's Video Nation series.

Her flight was sponsored by the Royal Navy to promote the recruitment of aviators, who are used in a variety of roles with the navy, from flying jets to supplying humanitarian aid in helicopters to disaster struck areas.

As well as helping to fund Sherida's flight, the navy also gives the gliding club support with covering the costs of equipment and lessons.

Royal Navy warrant officer Kevin Fear joined Sherida to witness her maiden flight first hand, before joining her for some stunts.

He said: "It was great to be there on the day and see Sherida perform the solo flight, especially after all the practice she's put in.

"As a pilot myself, I can appreciate the preparation that goes into any flight. I was even able to accompany her on a later flight and perform some aerobatics.

"The Royal Navy was pleased to sponsor Sherida, as she's such an enthusiastic pilot. I hope this raises the awareness that it's not only the RAF who need aviators, the Royal Navy also uses them for essential tasks."
