AN inmate who died after being attacked in Peterborough prison had taken delivery of Class A drugs the night before his death, a court has heard.Brian Haynes (33) died in HMP Peterborough, on Saville Road, on September 11 last year. He suffered a heart attack after allegedly being beaten in his cell by a group of six other prisoners.
Shane Farrington (26), of HMP Peterborough; Dale Maddison (43), of Deacons Lane, Ely; Sammy Lindsay (22), of Bainton Green Road, in Bainton, near Stamford; Sebastian Waller (26), of Moorland Court, Skaters Way, in Werrington, Peterborough and Gary Stretch (43), of Badgeney Road, in March all deny manslaughter.
Paul Jefford (24), of Wellington Street, in Peterborough city centre, has pleaded guilty to the charge.
Norwich Crown Court has previously heard the gang had plotted to give Mr Haynes a "violent warning", after resentment grew over his alleged drug and tobacco dealing in the jail.
Jurors heard yesterday that, four days after Mr Haynes' death, Dale Maddison allegedly told custody officers that Mr Haynes had received 100 worth of 'smack' - either cocaine or heroin - the night before his death.
While Maddison was being transferred from Ely to Cambridge, he allegedly told custody officer David Corry about the drugs.
Detective Sergeant Martin Elmer, from the major investigation team at Peterborough police, said Maddison had also admitted to him that he pretended to have an epileptic fit on the ground floor of the prison, to distract wardens while the rest of the group went to Mr Haynes' cell.
Det Sgt Elmer said Maddison told him: "I was just asked to cause a distraction. I did not know what was going to happen."
Interviews with members of the group were read to the jury yesterday by Detective Constable Kevin Beaumont and prosecutor John Farmer.
The court heard that Shane Farrington told police he had gone to Mr Haynes' cell on the night of the alleged attack and Mr Haynes agreed to lend him some tobacco, if he paid him back a week later.
Farrington claimed Mr Haynes only sold tobacco.
Referring to the alleged attack he said: "I have nothing to say. I did not do anything."
The trial continues.
