Council vehicles to run on used cooking oil

USED cooking oil is being recycled and converted into bio-diesel under a new scheme launched by Peterborough City Council.

USED cooking oil is being recycled and converted into bio-diesel under a new scheme launched by Peterborough City Council.Residents are being asked to pour their used cooking oil into a dedicated storage tank at the household recycling centre in Dogsthorpe, which will then be converted and used to power the centre’s vehicles.

Recycling contracts officer Amy Nebel said: “Most residents use cooking oil in their homes and the cooking oil conversion process offers an environmentally-friendly way for them to dispose of what would otherwise be a potential pollutant.

“Oils must not be poured down sink plugholes, drains or sewers as they will cause blockages, pollute watercourses and can damage vegetation and wildlife.”

nDogsthorpe household recycling centre is open seven days a week. Opening times until March are 8am to 4pm with late opening until 6pm on Mondays and Thursdays.
