MORE than 50,000 commuters who pass through Peterborough railway station every day could be caught up in travel chaos after rail workers from two train operators announced a 24-hour walkout.Staff at First Capital Connect (FCC) and National Express East Anglia, which run some commuter services between Peterborough and London, are to strike for 24 hours on Monday, March 30, in separate rows over jobs.
Around 1,500 staff will walk out from midnight on Monday. The Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union ordered the strikes after accusing the two firms of failing to guarantee no compulsory redundancies.
Leader of the union Bob Crow said First Capital Connect and National Express East Anglia were seeking to cut jobs “solely to maintain profits and dividends”.
FCC runs services between London King’s Cross and Peterborough, while National Express East Anglia operates trains from London Liverpool Street to Peterborough.
The majority of services between Peterborough and London are run by National Express East Coast, which is not affected by the strikes.
A National Express East Anglia spokesman said in the event of strike action taking place, it would be able to run the majority of its services although trains into Peterborough would be hit.
First Capital Connect said it would be holding talks with union officials.
