City centre tourism maps send visitors up the garden path

GETTING around in Peterborough has always seemed simple, thanks to a number of maps located in the city centre.But one eagle-eyed observer has discovered it might not be so easy after all, and fears visitors to the city may be heading in the wrong direction for at least some of the places shown on one of the maps.
Mandy Clark (41) was in the city centre going about her business when she made the discovery.
On close inspection, Mandy, from Stanground, Peterborough, noticed that the map in Cathedral Square showed the JobCentre and Gala Bingo still at their old sites, despite moving across the city more than two years ago.
And tourists caught short in the city centre could be heading the wrong way as well, as the public toilets in Cathedral Square which were closed last year are still marked on the map.
However, an address for the Tourist Information Centre, previously located in Bridge Street, has had a white sticker placed over it, indicating its current address in the Cathedral grounds.
Mrs Clark said: "I was sitting waiting for the NatWest bank to open, and I was looking at the map in the square when I noticed the discrepancies.
"The map had the Gala Bingo still in London Road, and the JobCentre still in Westgate, when neither of them have been there for years."
The Job Centre moved from its Westgate home to Broadway in 2006, while the bingo hall moved to Westfield Road in 2005.
Mrs Clark said: "If maps in the city centre are not updated for that amount of time, it does not look good for the city.
"It is no good for people who are new to the city or who are visiting if the maps are not accurate, especially when they are in the city centre.
"I only noticed the two errors, but who knows how many other things are in the wrong place, or have not been added?"
Peterborough City Council's city centre director, Annette Joyce, said the outdoor advertising company JCDecaux produced the city centre maps and had the reproduction rights.
She added: "We have contacted the company so that the maps can be updated.
"I would like to thank the member of public who drew this issue to the city council's attention."
