Children were good sports on activity days

IT'S that time of year again when thousands of schoolchildren across Peterborough dig out their running shoes for a series of fun and exciting sports days. From running to throwing and from balancing tests to speed skills, both primary and secondary schools have been putting on a range of events.

Voyager School, in Mountsteven Avenue, has been one of the most active schools in recent weeks with not only its own sports day, but a special day for feeder schools.

Having held the inter-tutor group sports day at the beginning of June, the school then swung the doors open to more than 200 primary school pupils.

School sports co-ordinator Chris Davitt said: “The sports day went really well and we had different tutor groups taking part on different days.

“Every pupil in the school took part in the event, and there’s always points given out to everyone. It helps that everyone gets involved and that everyone enjoys it.

“The multi-skill days for primary schools were on different days for each different year group from our eight feeder schools, where we focus on balance, agility and speed.

“More than 250 pupils took part on each day and it went really well. The pupils really enjoyed it.”

But the pupils of Voyager School weren’t the only ones having all the fun as at Old Fletton Primary School, in London Road, they also took time out from the usual schedule for their annual sports day.

Although the majority of the events at the school were competitive, they also had a number of activities intended to improve their basic skills linked with movement.

PE co-ordinator Chris Mooney said: “Our sports day was really good.

“It was organised so that the children could take part in competitive races, but we also had skilled events, which were non-competitive to enjoy and take part.

“We had activities on the playground to help the children improve their co-ordination, balance, agility and skill levels.”
