Bridge Street shops may be occupied soon

Peterborough City Council has announced it is in final talks with a firm looking to move into the old Woolworths building, in Bridge Street

Peterborough City Council has announced it is in final talks with a firm looking to move into the old Woolworths building, in Bridge StreetAnd town hall chiefs say they are closing in on a deal to fill the empty Limon Caf premises, which are also in Bridge Street.

Both shops have been empty for a number of months, but it is hoped new tenants will be in the buildings by September.

The former Woolworth's store has been empty since the company went bust in January, but talks have now reached an advanced stage to fill the building.

The news came at yesterday's city council cabinet meeting, the first since councillor Marco Cereste took over as council leader.

Cabinet member for regional and business engagement Cllr Gavin Elsey told the meeting that the deal was close to being concluded.

He said: "We are in negotiations with our preferred new tenant.

"They have come back with a final offer, and while we still have some negotiations to go we are confident we will be able to get the deal concluded.

"We want to get the deal done as soon as possible, and the potential tenants are keen to be open in September."

However, because of the delicate state of negotiations, Cllr Elsey said it was not possible to name the business.

Last month the city council said that negotiations with two large High Street names to fill the large store were on-going, although both Primark and TK Maxx ruled themselves out of opening a shop there.

The negotiations are part of the city council's bid to rejuvenate Bridge Street, including finding new tenants for the empty Limon Caf, located under offices at the town hall.

The cafe has been empty since September last year, but talks are being held to find a new business to fill the shop.

Cllr Cereste said another deal was nearly completed to fill the empty caf.

He said: "We are waiting for the final contracts to come through."
