Environment campaigner Lucinda Story is hoping to inspire a "green revolution" in the fashion industry after winning through to the final of the nation's biggest beauty pageant.
Environment campaigner Lucinda Story is hoping to inspire a "green revolution" in the fashion industry after winning through to the final of the nation's biggest beauty pageant.Aspiring model Lucinda will take part in the prestigious Miss England contest in London next month, having clinched the Miss East Anglia crown.
The 23-year-old had looked set to miss out on a place in the final after finishing among the runners-up in the Miss Every Model competition held at the Haycock Hotel in Wansford, near Peterborough, in May.
However, she made the most of a second opportunity when she wowed the judges at the Miss East Anglia contest in Colchester, Essex, earlier this month.
Now, the university graduate, who lives in Belmesthorpe, near Stamford, hopes to use the platform of the Miss England finals to campaign for the environment.
She said: "I want to raise awareness of green issues, so 2009 can be the year that Miss England goes green."
Nursery assistant Lucinda is a passionate environmental campaigner, and even wore a specially made recyclable dress during one stage of the qualifying contest.
As well as parading up and down the catwalk in swimwear and evening dresses, Miss England contestants are given the chance to speak about their ideals and aspirations.
Lucinda, who has a degree in creative expressive therapies from the University of Derby, plans to use that opportunity to deliver her environmental message.
"I, along with so many young people, have a genuine concern for our environment," she said. "It's not too late to make a change, and already we are seeing huge improvements in the way people are recycling more, and the increase in the use of renewable energy.
"East Anglia is taking a lead in this movement to improve the environment in all sorts of ways. I am very proud to be able to use the Miss England contest to promote a greater understanding of these vital issues."
The winner of Miss England, which takes place on July 19 and 20, qualifies for the Miss World pageant and will be decided with the help of a public vote.
