TAKE a brief step back in time and soak up the unique atmosphere of an Eisteddfod at Flag Fen this weekend (27/28 June). The event is based on the ancient Celtic festival which our ancestors who lived at Flag Fen enjoyed every year.

Its roots can be traced back to the 12th century, and history uncovers celebrations of creativity, music, poetry and the art of storytelling and performance.

One of this weekend's highlights promises to be the Chief Bard of the Fens – which will see local contestants wage a war of the words as they bid to win the 2009 title.

Last year was the first time the event was held in Peterborough, and judges crowned Robin Herne Chief Bard of the Fens after a compelling performance.

This year, Robin returns to the competition, but as a judge rather than a competitor. Robin has also selected the theme for the competition this year, which is wolves.

General manager of Flag Fen Neil Hart said: "This is the second year we have held the Eisteddfod event at Flag Fen.

"We already have a number entrants to the Battle of the Bard competition, including Peterborough's Poet Laureate from 2007 to 2008, Mark Grist.

"If there are any more last minute potential competitors that would like to take part, now is the time to get in touch."

Entrants are also being sought for the young poet of the year competition, which is open to young people between the ages of eight and 12 years.

Mr Hart added: "The event is set to be fantastic, with lots of family fun planned. Tomorrow we have the young poet of the year competition and then the Battle of the Bards on the Sunday, both which will be great for spectators.

"There will also be a host of activities throughout the weekend, including story-telling, poetry readings, children's workshops, arts and crafts stalls, music, dancing and a delicious hog roast."

The Eisteddfod event runs from 10.30am to 4pm both on Saturday and Sunday. Admission for an adult costs 5 with free entry for children under five. To find out more, or to register interest for the Battle of the Bard competitions, visit www.flagfen.com or call Neil Hart on 01733 313414.
