ARSONISTS have torched a barn containing about 20 tonnes of straw. Two fire crews from Wisbech were called to reports of a barn on fire on Panswell Lane, off Barton Road in Wisbech at 2.11am yesterday morning.
The firefighters arrived to find a barn measuring about five metres by 10 metres and about 20 tonnes of straw on fire. There were also several cylinders in the barn.
They used a covering jet to cool the cylinders until they could be moved and extinguished the fire by 4.06am.
A re-inspection took place at 8.18am yesterday morning at which point several hotspots still remained and there was no danger of them reigniting.
A fire services spokesperson said: “The structure of the barn was unstable and could have collapsed on those responsible. The fact that there were gas cylinders in the barn contributed to this danger.”
He said the cause of the fire was believed to be deliberate.
