A DARING photographer who braves the unknown depths of the sea snapping sharks and whales has won a prestigious international award.Tony Baskeyfield, a former diving officer for Peterborough Sub Aqua Club, has ventured to all corners of the globe to win first place in the SUBIOS Seychelle Underwater Festival for digital photography.

The winning picture is of a porcelain crab which he took while diving off the coast of Indonesia.

Tony (47), from Old Priory Farm Road, in Deeping St James, said: "I'm delighted to win such a prestigious award. It was a great surprise to get the news.

"It has taken six years to get recognised for all the pictures I have taken.

"As part of the award, I have been invited to the Seychelles for the next festival. I will also be picking up a trophy."

He said: "For my next trip, I am going to visit Guadeloupe, off the coast of South America. I will be getting in a cage to come face to face with great white sharks.

"I am relishing the prospect of seeing the sharks, and, with my experience, I hope not to be intimidated."

Travelling has always been a part of Tony's life. He spent a lot of time growing up in Gibraltar, and it was there he developed a passion for diving.

He said: "I have always had a keen interest in diving. Six years ago I decided to combine photography with diving.

"I set myself the task of getting pictures from the most remote places in the world.

"The day I stop learning is the day I stop taking photographs, and, to be honest, I doubt the day will ever come."

This year, Tony has been fortunate enough to take photographs of killer whales in Norway and California.

He is married to Cheryl, and they have a one-year-old daughter called Sophie.

He occasionly uses his wife as a model in his photos, and he hopes his baby daughter will follow in her mother's footsteps.

Tony now works for Plus Two design and photography, in Frognall Village, near Market Deeping.

His colleague Graham Booth said: "The award is great news.

"It shows customers we are really passionate about our work."
