AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL dig has begun in Peterborough's historic Cathedral Square.

AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL dig has begun in Peterborough's historic Cathedral Square. An area of the square has been cordoned off while a mechanical digger is used to excavate the site.

The dig is being carried out before work starts to install a series of water features in the square.

A spokeswoman for urban regeneration company Opportunity Peterborough said: "The work will take five days to complete."

She said the search for historical artefacts was the standard start to such a major project.

The water features and other improvements to Cathedral Square are being carried out as part of Opportunity Peterborough's Streets, Squares and Spaces project to breathe new life into the city centre.
