Agency says Illegal river fishermen flee patrols
A CRACKDOWN on people fishing illegally on the River Nene in Peterborough has so far proved fruitless.
The Environment Agency vowed to get tough on anglers who flout fishing laws on the river but, despite regular patrols, no offenders have yet been found and no fines dished out.
It said potential law-breakers had been spotted, but escaped before officers could take action.
A spokesperson said: “We have been patrolling the river but have not found anybody who was fishing illegally. We did have a couple of people who caught sight of us and ran off.”
As the fishing season is over, people found fishing the river can be fined up to £2,500.
Former Mayor of Peterborough Marion Todd admitted the area near her home in Potters Way has been quiet in the past few weeks, but that she has seen people with fishing tackle. She added: “I haven’t found where they’re fishing yet.”
To report illegal fishing, call the Environment Agency on 0800 807060.

Sunday, May 30, 2010 at 03:52 PMThey defo need to think about the best times to catch these people,as said above, evenings and weekends are going to be best. You dont need to go far to find these people fishing the river out of season. i took a half hour walk along the river today and photographed 4 people all fishing out of season. There are plenty of access points to get to the river,it would be a good idea for two to go in at one point and two at another so any fleeing crimanals will hopefully run into the officers. If anyone whats a copy of the pictures of these guys fishing out of season, just drop me a mail at Mail@carpspace.co.uk.

Sunday, April 18, 2010 at 07:39 PMI'm just glad their making a visible deterrent. But as eggcraft says maybe they should do a bit of undercover as well, I've recently seen them fishing at night nears Potters Way and Rivergate area at weekends.

Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 12:25 PMPerhaps they should employ officers who can run.

Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 11:48 AMIs it any wonder they flee. The officers should try to look like fishermen, not like environment officers. As it is the off season they should also look a bit shifty. Not too difficult to do , I suspect.
