A1073 set to shut for three weeks

THE busy A1073 will shut for three weeks while ageing sections of the road between Peterborough and Spalding are resurfaced.

THE busy A1073 will shut for three weeks while ageing sections of the road between Peterborough and Spalding are resurfaced. The resurfacing works will get underway on Monday and will coincide with the construction of a new roundabout at Crowland as part of the 80 million Spalding to Eye bypass scheme.

Peterborough City Council will carry out important carriageway patching from the B1443 Masons Bridge to Wrights Drove.

Lincolnshire County Council will conduct structural patching and surfacing in two sections at the north end of the A1073; from the A1073/A16 roundabout to the junction with Drain Bank and from the junction with Stonegate, Cowbit (B1357) to Backgate, Cowbit.

Divisional highways manager at the county council Steve Willis said: "The main aim of carrying out all of these works during the same period of time is to reduce the ultimate disruption to the travelling public. Arranging for contractors to carry out their roundabouts works simultaneously also removes the need for 24-hour traffic lights over a 14-16 week period.

"It is our intention to re-open the routes in three weeks but disruption in the meantime is unavoidable. We therefore hope people will be tolerant as we work to ensure the safety of all those who travel on the roads."

The diversion route for the Peterborough works will be from the junction of A47/ A1073 along the A47 to A15 to A16, Spalding and vice versa. Properties and businesses within this work area will have access maintained.

For Lincolnshire's improvements, the diversion for all through traffic will be A16/A15/A47. Residents and businesses that fall within the closure area will receive a letter and permit to allow them through the works area to their property.

For the Morgan Est roundabout works, the area between Wrights Drove and Carringtons Drove on the A1073 will be closed. The local diversion in place will be B1040, Thorney Road, B1443 Bukehorn Road, A1073 and vice versa.
