£4m turbines plan for village

Plans for two huge new wind turbines in Thorney, near Peterborough, have been submitted to Peterborough City Council.

Plans for two huge new wind turbines in Thorney, near Peterborough, have been submitted to Peterborough City Council. The project, at French Farm, will cost close to 4 million, and the company behind the plan estimates that 500,000 of that cost will be spent in the local area, on everything from local contractors to hoteliers in nearby villages.

Original planning permission was granted to Cornwall Light & Power (CLP) in 1993 for the installation of two 400kw turbines.

However, due to a substantial increases in technology since then, the company hopes that permission for advanced, more powerful turbines will be granted.

Development manager at CLP Steve Allen said: "Our new application proposes two turbines in the same location, but with a total power output of four megawatts, which is five times the total capacity of the consented scheme.

"They would produce enough electricity to supply more than 1,700 Cambridgeshire homes each year, and would offset more than 6,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from conventional fossil fuel burning power stations."

Mr Allen added: "We are confident that this scheme is the right one for the area.

"Wind energy is the most advanced of all of the renewable energy technologies, and the time to act to cut CO2 emissions is now."

The tapered steel towers, each 60m high that are planned for Thorney are similar to the largest onshore turbine in the UK, which CLP installed in Whittlesey.

However, that has been at the centre of controversy since it bombarded homes and gardens in Kings Dyke with ice chunks on November 29 last year.

The turbine is out of action while the incident is investigated by the Health and Safety Executive.

Chief Executive of CLP Neil Harris said the company had conducted a thorough investigation into the ice-shedding incident, but he added: "Until a way forward has been agreed, the turbine will remain stopped."

Anyone with concerns over the new development can call the company on 01872 226930, or visit www.clpwindprojects.co.uk to see all the details of the plan, and other sites in the area.
