THE Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister have thanked three Peterborough students for their work raising awareness about the Holocaust.

Jack Hunt School students Sam Tuck (18), Georgia Evans (17) and Lucy Johnstone (18) were whisked off to 10 Downing Street for a reception with David Cameron and Nick Clegg on Tuesday, January 24.

The trio have played a major role in leading the school’s Pledge Against Prejudice campaign, which was inspired by school trips to Auschwitz through the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project.

The campaign has been running at the school for two years now and focuses on stamping out all forms of discrimination in the school, raising awareness of different religions and ethnicities as well as cracking down on all forms of bullying.

Prior to their Downing Street experience, the three pupils spent time at a reception at City Hall in London with London Mayor Boris Johnson, before being joined at Downing Street by Holocaust survivor Ben Helfgott.

Georgia said: “David Cameron and Nick Clegg were kind, thoughtful and respectful towards Ben and enthusiastic towards the rest of the guests.

“When we had the chance to speak to them both individually, we handed them each one of our pledge badges and a booklet containing everything we had done and what we hope to achieve in the near future. They took these with interest, immediately pinning on the badges and made humorous comments about our ‘Keep Calm and Join the Pledge’ poster.

“They both seemed impressed with everything the pledge had achieved, especially regarding Jack Hunt School’s development and positive attitude to diversity.”
