Twitter girl’s appeal to governors
AN OFFICIAL appeal against the exclusion of a teenager for posting a comment on Twitter has been submitted to school governors.
Chloe Fuller (15) was excluded for a day from Stanground College for tweeting about an altercation between a pupil and a teacher.
The altercation between the Year 7 and the teacher in December led to the police being called and shortly after, Chloe tweeted: “Lunchtimes at Stanground College are never dull, funniest chase I have ever seen!”
She was excluded on the grounds of “bringing the school into disrepute”, although the college has yet to clarify how this was the case.
She admits using her mobile phone to send the tweet, which the college says is against school rules. But the usual punishment for this is the confiscation of the phone.
Her mother Julie Fuller has written to college governors asking for the exclusion to be rescinded.
The appeal says: “The tweet...itself is not negative and if read objectively there is every reason to believe a member of the public...with no prior knowledge of the school would take the literal meaning and assume it was a positive comment.”

Monday, January 23, 2012 at 06:01 PMThat's what I said, the tweet could have meant numerous things. The whole thing is pathetic, the school should concentrate on sorting out REAL issues within its walls!

Monday, January 23, 2012 at 04:43 PMThere's nothing wrong with the tweet at all. The school doesn't say she actuslly broke any rules - so there should be no problem.

Monday, January 23, 2012 at 12:03 PMThere are probably rights and wrongs to this story - but people should never be punished for using their freedom of speech. It appears that the non use of mobile phone rule if it exists has been used as a the bolt to shut the stable door after the event .

Monday, January 23, 2012 at 11:20 AMI have followed this story from day one and I have had children in stanground college. The reason the fuller's are pursuing this is because there is no such rule in place at stanground college to say pupils will be excluded for using mobile phones! As for bringing them into disrupte, I think they do a good enough job of that themselves!

Monday, January 23, 2012 at 11:06 AMThe school rules state that any student caught using phones in school will have said phone confiscated! Stanground college were NOT within their rights to exclude anybody! The tweet was made BEFORE students were told not to post anything on social network sites! If it were your child, would you lie back and let them be punished in a way that is unfair or would you defend them? If stanground college stuck to their own rules then this wouldn't have gone so far! You have to ask yourself, why didn't they confiscate the phone?! How much more bad press are stanground college going to get before they ask themselves where THEY have gone wrong? They have failed so many of their pupils, it is very sad!!

Monday, January 23, 2012 at 11:04 AMSchoolchildren should simply abide by the rules. She knew the rules so tough. Take ALL phone off them on entry and return them on leaving at the end of the day.

Monday, January 23, 2012 at 10:02 AMRescinded on what grounds? Did she break the rules by using a phone on school property - yes. Are the school within their rights to enforce punishment as they see fit - yes. Without wanting to put a Brando quote into your head, what exactly are you rebelling against?
