Pupils get prizes for good work
GO-AHEAD students at Peterborough’s Nene Park Academy are getting computer games, mobile phone top-ups and cinema tickets in exchange for outstanding course work or contributions to their local community.
The academy has joined the national Vivo Miles scheme which enables students to collect points for a range of achievements, which can then be exchanged for gifts and rewards.
Students can also choose to turn their points into cash donations for their favourite charities.
Academy assistant principal Kevin Hartley said: “We have always tried to find alternative ways to motivate students – including last year’s very popular free pizza revision sessions – and Vivo Miles is another example of this.
“Schools have found a variety of ways to improve behaviour, attendance and achievement for years, but this scheme brings motivation bang up to date and we’ve found it’s something the students have really got excited about.”
The scheme is based on the air miles model. Students receive points on a special ‘credit card’ and can then browse a range of products which they can claim as their reward.
Principal Mark Woods gives a weekly Principal’s Award which also recognises achievements throughout school life. The winners are personally presented with a certificate and an additional 50 Vivo points.
