Two brothers handed over a cheque for £7,500 to Heltwate Special School in memory of their sister.

Andy and Stuart Simmonds, landlords of both the Ploughman and Dragon pubs in Werrington, raised the fantastic amount of money for the special school in Bretton, which helped to support their sister Kelly in her younger years.

“Heltwate helped my sister in leaps and bounds,” said Andy.

“For the past three years, my family and I have been raising thousands of pounds for charity in her memory.”

Kelly, who sadly died three years ago, aged just 32, used to attend the special school which today offers education for five to 19-year-old pupils with moderate to severe learning difficulties.

The school was delighted to receive the generous donation, which was presented to the staff and pupils at the school on Wednesday, last week.

“It was a pleasure to present the school with the money we had raised,” said Andy.

“Every penny counts and the funds raised will help both the school and the kids.”

The grand total of £7,500 was raised from a number of events held at the two pubs over the past year, including beer festivals and charity football matches.

“A big thank you goes out to all those in the community who have supported us in our fundraising efforts,” said Andy. “They’ve all helped to make a difference.”

Both Andy and Stuart will continue their fundraising for the school, despite the fact that they will be leaving the Dragon this month.

“We’ve had six fantastic years at the Dragon,” said Andy. “But we have lots of stuff planned for the future and will continue serving the community at The Ploughman. So watch this space!”
