THE CITY’S largest education institution has been judged “good” with outstanding features by Ofsted inspectors.

Peterborough Regional College (PRC), in Park Crescent, which serves around 8,000 students from the age of 14 upwards, was given the rating both in terms of its overall effectiveness and in its capacity to improve following an inspection in December.

The “good” grade, the second highest that Ofsted can give, for PRC’s overall effectiveness follows a “satisfactory” judgment in 2008.

Angela Joyce, college principal, said: “This inspection result is fantastic and I am very proud of all the staff and students at PRC.

“I knew we were very good at what we do for learners and employers alike and now Ofsted has confirmed this.

“I believe this is an excellent result for the people of Greater Peterborough and the communities we serve.”

Ofsted inspector Philippa Francis gave PRC outstanding, the highest grade, in aspects of its management, in keeping students safe and promoting their health and wellbeing as well as in how well PRC works with schools, employers and community groups to benefit its students.

She said: “PRC is a strongly improving and good college because of very good leadership and the unequivocal commitment of all staff to provide the very best for learners.”

She only gave a satisfactory grade for PRC’s ICT teaching.

Areas for improvement include that staff teaching different subjects share successful teaching methods at A-level, that pre-foundation level students’ progress should be monitored more closely and that teachers should increase the pace and challenge in the “small minority of unchallenging lessons”.

It was also recommended that PRC provides work experience opportunities for more full-time learners, provide opportunities for staff development and increase the rigour with which students’ progress is measured.

The report has been welcomed by Peterborough City Council’s cabinet member for education cllr John Holdich.

He said: “The college has a very important part to play in the success and the growth of our city.

“This excellent Ofsted report can only give confidence to our local firms and those wishing to relocate to the city that their training needs can be serviced by a quality provider with excellent facilities.”
