YOUNGSTERS at a primary school have had their learning “enriched” as part of a new initiative.

Every Friday afternoon, St Augustine’s Church of England Junior School hosts “enrichment” lessons which see the pupils, in mixed age groups, given the chance to experience new activities, learn new skills and discover talents they may have.

Eighteen different activities were chosen by both the staff and the children for the sessions, including Spanish, calligraphy, computer programming and observational drawing.

Pupils in their groups carry out each activity for four consecutive Fridays before moving on to the next, so they get to sample three per term.

The initiative has received a warm response from the youngsters taking part.

William Favall, a Year 5 pupil at the school, said: “Enrichment is brilliant, we do fun activities and learn new things.”

Daniel Roe, from Year 3, added: “It’s amazing, my best was computer programming when I made my own game.”

Jessica Lilly, from Year 6, said: “It’s a really fun and interesting way to end the week.”

Some of the activities, including drama, first aid and environmental studies, have been brought to the school, in Palmerston Road, Peterborough, with the help of staff from the Nene Park Academy, based in Orton Longueville.

Stephen Cox, headteacher of St Augustine’s Church of England Junior School, said: ”We are hugely grateful to Mr Woods and the staff of the Nene Park Academy for their support in this initiative and for their expertise.

“We look forward to continuing to work in close partnership with the Nene Park Academy.”
