The 2013 Peterborough Music Festival attracted more than 1,000 performers of all ages to compete for trophies and titles in 91 musical categories.

The performances ranging from classic solo violin to Spanish guitar and recorder bands.

But junior choirs left the biggest impression on judges, organisers and audiences, by packing the auditorium of The Voyager, in Walton,

For the first year the Town Hall, in Bridge Street, was too small to accommodate the largest choirs, whose contest had to be moved to Walton academy.

Adult choirs slugged it out at St John’s Church in Cathedral Square, for the second year running.

K Y Glee, a 50-strong youth choir formed at The Key Theatre, were the largest in size and dominated their class with an “outstanding” performance.

Festival secretary, Felicity Kamminga, said highlights included incredible jazz piano pieces and music from a miniature-harp, performed by talented youngsters.

She said: “We all feel we had a jolly good year, it went well and we had some brilliant performances of music of all kinds.

She added: “The organisers and judges really do believe that music is good for kids and we like to see children playing music of all kinds.”

The event was run over five days and the various attractions were staged in a variety of venues including the town hall, St John’s Church, in Cathedral Square, and at the Cresset in Bretton.

Teenage pianist Irena Radic (16) was crowned Peterborough Young Musician of the Year for her “electric” performance of pieces from international composers.
