ONE of the biggest businesses in the world has struck a deal with Peterborough Regional College to help unemployed people get onto the job market.

Soft drinks giant Coca Cola has set up an intensive three week ‘academy’ training workshop for 13 job seekers based in the city, who will all be guaranteed a job interview with the company, in Morley Way, Peterborough.

The academy started two weeks ago and trains local people, who are unemployed, to help them find a job, and oversees their progress in the search for work.

Their programme delivered at the college in Park Crescent consists of three weeks of training in subjects including customer service, interview skills, CV writing and other valuable work skills.

They will leave with a Level 1 Award in Work Skills with units in customer service and sales, and also the ongoing support of the college’s employment service.

Coca Cola Enterprises Peterborough has also invited all of the 13 candidates to its offices for one day’s work experience and a guaranteed job interview for the role of customer development representative at the Peterborough call centre.

It is the first sector-based work academy within East Anglia and has been designed and co-ordinated entirely by Peterborough Regional College.

Tara Forde, co-ordinator of the new programme at the college, said: “It has been a real privilege to play a part in the design and delivery of this work academy.

“The candidates have progressed so well and are already demonstrating clear abilities for the roles that they are going for at Coca Cola Enterprises.”

Jobcentre Plus referred 19 potential learners through the college, which in turn whittled the number down to 13 learners.

The learners who were unsuccessful for this venture have been picked up by the college for one of its employment preparation programmes.

Jobcentre manager Jane James said: “Sector based work academies are an important part of Government plans to get Britain working, and provide specific training and experience to the unemployed so they have a better chance in the labour market.

“We are delighted to work with Peterborough Regional College and Coca Cola to give people in the city this great opportunity.”

The learners are men and women and their ages range from 19 to 55.

In the wake of the scheme’s early success, the college is looking at continuing this learning programme with more large employers who have current vacancies. Feedback so far from the learners on the programme has been excellent, as they have all completed evaluation forms throughout the delivery to ensure they are all heading in the right path.

One of those who benefited said: “The trainers and the course has been excellent, much better than I had thought. It has boosted our confidence.”

I know one of the participants in this course. She has found it extremely helpful, focused and potentially rewarding. Congrats to PRC and Coca Cola for doing this, good to see some positives getting publicity :)
