Thursday, 10.30am: The government voted yesterday (19th January) to end the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) grant for students. Is anyone in Peterborough affected?

The government won the vote in the House of Commons by a majority of 59 votes - arguing that the allowance to keep teenagers in education was poorly targeted.

The EMA payments of up to £30 a week given to 16 to 19-year-olds students from low-earning households.

How will it affect your studies? What will you do?

Holly Golightly - Having read through some of your comments, while I don't agree with them, they are opinion and subjective so I can't argue particularly, well not without getting dragged in to an argument about how your address is important in formulating an opinion. Luckily you've not mentioned my area yet, so I could be safe. However, the one point you make as a fact - that teacher's aren't professionals - I know to be incorrect. I compile government statistics (for the ONS) and the status 'teacher' is a standard professional status - in fact it is one of the most black and white professional statuses there is, either you're a qualified teacher, or you're not. Other professions, e.g. accountants, architects, even junior doctors, may class themselves as a professional but have not yet passed their qualifying exams. For future reference, if you need a qualification in order to 'practise' a profession it is generally a professional position - skilled trades not withstanding. Just thought you should know. Getting something so clear and simple to understand wrong may undermine your further arguments elsewehere.

badbadsmell @196 Yaawn! Sorry, I almost fell asleep at your very boring comment. Luckily you did not say anything important (nothing new there) so I did not miss anything. Another lovely day for me - and you are still you... such a shame about that.

If you increase taxation and reduce spending that's a transfer of wealth. But where does it go?

I wonder if we can get up to 300 sensible comments and not repeats?
