A search launched by police and coastguard authorities for a man reported missing in Sutton Bridge overnight last for more than eight hours, it has emerged today.

Police were called just before 7.15pm over fears for the safety of a man thought to be from the Sutton Bridge area.

Officers and two coastguard rescue teams searched the river bank and up-shore, while a coastguard helicopter from Humberside was also called in.

But a Lincolnshire Police spokesman said: “The search was called off at around 3.30am when the man attended a police station in Norfolk.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, said: “We were asked to assist the police in a search for a missing male in the Sutton Bridge area from 8pm last night.

“Coastguard Rescue Teams from Sutton Bridge and Hunstanton searched the shoreline and up-river, while the Coastguard rescue helicopter based at Humberside was also sent to help in the search.

We were called in relation to the safety of a man who was believed to be in the Sutton Bridge area

“Fortunately, the man was located inland by Police later in the evening.”

UPDATE 8.45AM: Coastguard search for missing man in Sutton Bridge

Reports of a man feared missing led to a police and coastguard search in Sutton Bridge last night (Monday).

Two rescue teams from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and a rescue helicopter were called in by police after reports of a man missing from his home were received at about 8pm.

At its height, the search extended to the shoreline around Sutton Bridge after concerns that the man may have been in difficulty in the River Nene.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman said: “At 8pm on Monday, the coastguard was asked for help and assistance from the police in looking for a missing man in the Sutton Bridge area

“Concern was expressed that the person could well have been in the water after a vehicle and belongings had been found at the Port of Sutton Bridge.

“During the evening, two coastguard rescue teams from Hunstanton and Sutton Bridge did a shoreline up-river search.

“A coastguard rescue helicopter, based at Humberside, was also sent in to help with the search.

“Fortunately, the man was located inland safe and well by police later in the evening and at the point when light was fading.”

TUESDAY 8.20AM: Joint police and coastguard operation in Sutton Bridge

Police joined forces with coastguard officers in a reported operation near Sir Peter Scott Lighthouse, Sutton Bridge, last night (Monday).

Details of the operation are as yet unclear amid reports of an abandoned car having been left at the Port of Sutton Bridge at about 9.45pm.

An eye-witness said that the search lasted at least an hour, with one suggestion that a search had taken place for a missing person.

At one stage, two police vehicles, a search helicopter and three coastguard vessels were seen during the operation.
