Police will use force to remove travellers if they have not moved their encampment before a local football match begins.
The failure by travellers to depart from Ringwood in Bretton after being served a notice to leave by the city council has led to Cambridgeshire police issuing a Section 61 notice.
This will require the 10 caravans to have moved by 1pm on Saturday (August 13), an hour before the kick-off between ICA Sports and Moulton Harrox.
If they have not left by that time then the police will forcibly remove the travellers.
Action has been taken after police received reports of nuisance behaviour from residents.
Community Inspector Kate Firman said: “We will try to get some patrols in the area to reassure the public.”
In 2010, a league fixture between West Town and Farcet United Reserves had to be moved from Ringwood due to travellers setting up camp on football pitches at the site.
The current encampment is not on a pitch but nearby.
Peterborough City Council has previously said that the travellers had moved onto the land after cutting the padlock off a gate.
Travellers on the Embankment have also been ordered by the council to leave by the end of today.
