Peterborough landlord guilty of harassing tenant

A Peterborough landlord who harassed a former tenant has been sentenced to a community order and told to pay £1,000.

Mohammed Yousaf, 57, of Chestnut Avenue, Peterborough, was found guilty of one charge of harassment.

Yesterday (Thursday 28 April 2016) Peterborough Magistrates’ Court heard how there were a number of altercations between Yousaf and his tenant.

Yousaf made numerous attempts to enter the property to force his tenant, who has a wife and young child, to vacate the household without following the lawful process for eviction.

Peterborough City Council was alerted to the situation by a member of staff at the child’s school who had concerns for the family’s wellbeing.

The city council has since helped the family to find alternative accommodation.

Yousaf was sentenced to a community order of 12 months, with the direction to undertake 160 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay a victim compensation fee of £500 and to pay £500 costs to Peterborough City Council.
