Stewart Jackson: on Judiciary sentencing policy in Peterborough

SOME of the Judiciary in Peterborough rarely fail in their efforts to appear out of touch and insouciant at the message their sentencing policies often send out.

SOME of the Judiciary in Peterborough rarely fail in their efforts to appear out of touch and insouciant at the message their sentencing policies often send out. This week is no exception. Brothers Lee and Carl Edwards – who between them have a disgraceful 135 previous convictions between them – were handed down sentences of 30 months and 51 weeks – yes weeks – by deputy circuit Judge John Farnworth this week.

These low life specimens have specialised in stealing from people who are already not well off, those in poorer housing, with young children and those who struggle along on meagre incomes.

What message do these joke sentences send to these victims? In three words – What's the point?

In the latest euphemistic liberal parlance adopted by the probation service/magistrates service/prison service/judiciary and increasingly the police, we should feel a degree of sorrow for these burglars, as they are "excluded" from society and lead "chaotic lives (sic)" – although never chaotic enough to sign on for their benefits or plan their next criminal capers.

In my opinion, these brothers grim should have been locked away for a long period – where they could have been prevented from re-offending and given a real choice: mend your ways, change your life and you'll have a chance to rebuild your life. Or else…..

The current system is a disaster: Short sentences mean that the miscreants are sometimes out on the street in weeks and have no opportunity to rehabilitate.

It is nothing short of a social catastrophe, which costs us all billions of pounds a year. And who's looking out for decent folk?

The ones who don't rob, who pay their bills, look out for their neighbours, get up in the morning to make sure their kids get to school and then get to work on time and do a good days work because they have a pride in themselves?

Quite rightly, my party is committed to giving more legal protection to householders whose homes are invaded by these thugs, to free up police from paperwork and bureaucracy and to publicly name and shame persistent criminal – whose right to privacy must always be outweighed by rights of the law-abiding majority.

Look, Stewart's jumping on the bandwagon again! Go Stewart. As someone who's arrogantly taken money from us law abiding citizens, I call this a case of the pot calling the kettle black. And you think you can get my vote... Think again.
