Penny Young: A hip and happening weekend

Saturday

I am so hip and happening and down with the kids that I can hardly believe it!This weekend is turning out to be an excitingly cool one...although I do realise that that's an oxymoron (at last! I have waited for an entire year to use the word oxymoron in a column - and now that's twice! I definitely deserve a reward. Perhaps I'll treat myself to some of that expensive new shower cleaner in Lakeland that I've had my eye on.)

Our hip and happening weekend began last night when we visited the Cellar Bar beneath the Thorpe Hotel. Simon and Mirko from the One-Eyed Cats were playing - it was all very laid-back and just like being in a smoky Parisian bar (except there was no smoke and no Parisians). I'm not sure if I managed to bring off my patented version of a jive, but then I don't get out much and surely I deserve points for effort?

Tonight, we went to the brand spanking new Pizza Express - very busy, very shouty, but great food. Obviously THE new place to eat pizza. The couple at the table next to ours were so cool that they had three bottles of pink champagne, so obviously I got excited all over again and felt that just through our mere proximity we were suffused with their coolness. And to cap it all, our lovely waitress bore a startling resemblance to Cate Blanchett.

"She looks just like her, doesn't she?" I hissed to Mr Young after she'd brought over a dish of sun-dried tomatoes.

"Yes, I suppose she does," he said.

"I'm going to tell her when she comes back," I said, bathed in fumes of well-being and tiny alcoholic pink bubbles.

"No, don't," he said, in alarm. "What if she has always believed that she is the spitting image of Demi Moore? You'll really upset her."

I could have started an argument right there and then - I believe in giving compliments where they are due while Mr Young thinks that's just showing off - but with great forbearance, I chose to move on and enjoy the evening.

Two hours later we left, to an audible sigh of relief (I think Cate had found my meaningful looks a little disturbing) and headed down to Charters. Our friend Andy's band The Surgens was playing there and we'd promised to go and watch him.

It was packed with hip and happening people of all ages and sizes, all happily swilling down beer and tapping their feet. Still suffused with coolness, we bought tickets to yet another live music event at the Solstice for the following Saturday (tonight, and it's in aid of Thorpe Hall - so come if you can!). A plethora of bands (now that's another good word. I definitely deserve that shower cleaner) will be performing. Oh, the heady joys of a rock and roll lifestyle.

Sunday

"It's been a great weekend, hasn't it?" I said to Mr Young this morning. "Normally, we'd have just watched the Sopranos and been in bed by eleven but there we were, out with some pretty damn cool people and listening to some pretty damn cool music."

"Calm down," he said. "It'll be tears before bedtime for you at this rate."

I went into the bathroom. My deodorant had run out so I borrowed Mr Young's. Unfortunately, it turned out to be shaving foam.

"Very rock and roll," he observed, watching me run out of the bathroom covered in white foam. "Shall I throw the television out of the window, or will you?"
