Over 150 local people are now registered with Peterborough's Greeniversity. All are completely different but share a common interest in learning and sharing 'green skills'.Greeniversity is being run by green charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) and is being brought to life by all the teachers and learners registered. The project's aim is to connect people who have green skills with people who want to learn them.

From knitting to bike maintenance, if it's a skill that's going to help you be more environmentally-friendly, you will be able to learn about it through Greeniversity - for free. Green skills are defined as anything that helps ensure a healthy, active life. This could be growing food, it could be massage, yoga or dance!

Teachers are ordinary local people who are willing to share their skill with small groups of other people keen to learn. Teachers can choose to receive free training from Greeniversity to help build their confidence and deliver a successful workshop, seminar or class.

There are a whole range of free classes being held over the next few months...

The resourceful cook: On February 10 and again on March 24, a hands-on veg box cookery class is being held between 6pm and 8pm. This practical workshop is designed for beginners and will teach you how to cook a range of everyday meals using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Using a basic set of ingredients plus whatever is in the veg box (provided by Riverford Organic) you will learn to make a delicious, nutritious meal. Participants will be encouraged to pitch in ideas for recipes, experiment and of course eat the results. Most definitely a 'learn by doing' lesson where you will pick up a few basic recipes that can be adapted for a wide range of veg.

Knit your own winter wardrobe: Knitting for beginners is held on Wednesday evenings in the city centre. This course is ideal if you have never attempted knitting before and want to learn the basics. You'll learn how to cast on, cast off, simple stitches and how to read a basic pattern.

What's really in your food? Do you want to really understand your food and what manufacturers are telling you about it? This course will give you the skills to examine food labels and help you become a confident consumer including:

Legal labelling - hints to help you quickly know if something is worth buying

Origins of food - how do you know where your food has come from?

Claims - including eco-claims, homemade, and pictorial representations

Nutritional information, additives and e-numbers

Registering with Greeniversity is completely free, plus it's quick and simple. To browse classes visit www.greeniversity.org.uk.

Classes are held in locations all over the city. If you don't have internet access you can call 01733 866441 for more details.
